Litwo, Ojczyzno moja! 1963 |
Mickiewicz’s Courtyard
Here lived Mickiewicz. Captivating Like a prayer it resounds: Litwo, Ojczyzno moja. Like the sea It rebounds: O, Litwo, Ojczyzno moja. A square courtyard. Monolithic, Like a step in a mine, It resounds more sonorously: O, Litwo, Ojczyzno moja! And like love, like a reproach, Like a sign of illness, Resounds the mournful: Ojczyzno, Ojczyzno moja. From that little window Mitzkevich Looked out on the little yard, A poet, he looked elegant, But his gaze was bitter. He listened to that inborn rhythm. Still deaf, Still distant: O Litwo, Ojczyzno moja! 1963 Translated by Elaine Wilson |
Morning. Old Vilnius
When the growl of automobiles, Is still not heard in old Vilnius, As if hiding from people, An old woman feeds pigeons. A fool in the window, not hearing false notes, Plays bars of different marches as the dawn barely breaks. Somberly sticking out his lip, He plays on his copper horn. On the red brick causeway A strange reflection shines And, dark from all manner of sorrow, An old woman feeds pigeons… A pigeon coos, fat and sated, Over the causeway, washed with rain. A fool plays: “Do-re-mi!” He trumpets over the sleeping people. And so it was in the time of Gediminas: A small flame smoked in the hearth, And a plump pigeon cooed, And a lad kissed a lass. And a tenacious fool played his horn, and that old woman in her shawl of black Fed those docile pigeons Or rocked a cradle… Indeed, have we learned much Since that time when the cauldron bubbled With the magical root of sorcery? A green moon ambled along Over the old university, And an old woman wandered through the yard Saying her prayers before the dawn. And the fool's horn blew: Turu-turu! 1963 Translated by Elaine Wilson |

А. М. 1983-1984 |

A.M. I love you, Lithuania! Ancient enmity Grown cold. And swords—spoils long since grown rusty. We have been led by the same lofty star Which fated us to live within one nation. Profanation of the holy has long been condemned. We have forgiven you, and now you forgive us. And now the ear is soothed by the Latin of your names: Marcellius, Justinius. Lithuania, pray for us! I pray for you. We’ll fuse Tsargrad with glorious Rome. And tears will flow from our eyes, Burned by the shared smoke of the fatherland. My friend! My poet! We will not be divided By different languages or divisive faiths. With one bullet we shall be slain Side by side. And for a moment We will prevail. Oh! We have not long to live… Lithuania, don’t go, for without you I am nothing. Alfonsas, no, now shall not be cut the thread Of love, of fate, of art. 1983 - 1984 Translated by Elaine Wilson |
Two Poems
Only for you 1 Tallinn—secret dwelling, Current year, yesteryear. Snow flying, slowly melting Over trees and over towers. Tallinn—transient sanctuary, Silent and watchful. Day beyond the window is quietly breaking, A day elapsed, a day forthcoming. Tallinn—secret dwelling, Bygone year and year to come. A train, slowly arriving, A train, slowly departing. Tallinn—transient sanctuary, Sleepy snow descending on eaves… Asking: but where? Where else? Could it be—completely? Eternally? 2 Like the pursuit of estrangement, Weakness and strength are akin. With a hearty and rousing clop O God, O God! I cry in the din. You and I both were fashioned So strangely and perfectly. The days of our past—blissful, Blissful. Or maybe—heathenly? In that park, which is drawn black on white-- Lines of coal upon the snow, Or maybe—upon slate in chalk, On white paper—the color of ore-- In that park, which is printed Upon me in curling calligraphy, In that narrow city, arrow-pointed Coated with polish of pewter grey, In that city—only farewell And the strong scent of shale oil. Are we happy or are we woeful? How do we know? And who can tell? 1965 Translated by Elaine Wilson |
A Little Tallinn Song
It’s nice to travel to Tallinn, When the city is already snowed in And from the winter all frozen. And to see Ellen with Jan, Yes, see Jan with Ellen. I don’t need much at all, My trip is practically pointless: From restaurant to restaurant I’ll saunter And under snowfall I’ll wander And I’ll see Jan with Ellen, Yes, see Ellen with Jan. I’ll listen to the wind and snow That twist and twirl around the window, And I’ll see: Jan and Ellen Yes, I’ll see Jan and Ellen Exchange a smiling expression. But one day, early morning From the platform I’ll suddenly go, Headed straight into the raging snow, Where there will be no Ellen, Where there will be no Jan. Yes, where there’s neither Ellen nor Jan. 1966 or 1967 Translated by Elaine Wilson |
The Regular
From every oven, from every chimney Rises a forest of curling smoke. Raincoat tossed on, I stroll; Across my brow, hat pulled low. I rush to the cellar refuge Where quickly and unhurried A red-haired waiter Brings two glasses of beer. The second glass is for a student, A cross-eyed devil from Tartu, He starts in on his next drink-- Somewhere else he's had two. He’s in a rough-knit grey sweater; By his look—a bully and troublemaker. He drinks and rather rakishly Cracks the tail of a lobster. He’s a regular. A woodpecker Pounding the dining counter. He’s friend and Mephistopheles To the barmaid and dishwasher. A fan of Faulkner and yoga, Antonioni and Buddhism, He takes comfort at the mention Of conventional allusion. He’s not dangerous. Let him fire off Dual-meaning paradoxes, And let him keep believing He’s gifted in verse and boxing. I like his joviality, His carefree insolence, And even how, into his sauce, He stubs his “Tallinn” cigarette. There's a round dish piled with crawfish, A glass of foaming amber, And a strange slant of clouds and smoke In the round window of the cellar. 1972 Translated by Elaine Wilson |

L.T. Here, in Tallinn, I wandered with Leon. And the city became a studio For the filming of two clichéd dramas. So cliché! If it weren’t for the death of the artist! We understood how fate is so divergent When we entered the Lutheran church. Here, in the fortress, where the city towers Tell inhuman fables Of their sentinel youth, Here no eagle descended; a raven Flew down in order to peck at Leon’s eyes When he was still perfectly alive. Here, in Toompea, as in the Middle Ages, From hellish arrogance and owl’s blood Boiled an enchanted potion. But Leon and I were careless. And he took a drink. And the gate-grown potion Forever poisoned his heart. And I was poisoned by the curse of vengeance. And it is my terrible dishonor, But for the first time, I revere the fairness Of sword and rack, and tsar Ivan, And cruel Peter…Oh, how strange it is To foster this savage dream! 1971 Translated by Elaine Wilson |
