Signs
Swedish stone, drawn-out speech, Scent of the sea, the river bank. It’s frightful to call it by name: It’s as if the curse of longing, Is revived as the sound leaves your throat. The cry of the seagulls is revolting and coarse. The tiles on the roofs of old buildings-- Like the bonnets of venerable widows. From the church to the river—lanterns All lit up, though one does not glow, And there shine the tracks of a wheel… That is my city, familiar to the point of tears. 2005 Translated by Elaine Wilson |
