In Memory of Lithuania
(a waltz) A house of mist, like a house of adobe, the chalet of Thomas Mann, most likely, he was a good Bursche. Will it take long to hitch up this load of nonsense? An extinct Kursh heads across the river to visit the extinct Prussians. The fisherman’s wife lazily adjusts her bodice. On the beach the dig leaves shits. Damn it all for all I care. Apparently into the hot blood of Abraham is mixed the cold lymph of the Lapp, the galantine of morose Finns. And forgetting the smirk on my face, I clearly see Kazis and Milda among the crowd of Danutas and Birutas. You know, what seems like paradise to us is never something we choose ourselves, but rather to which we’re hauled away. They all died out: the Huns, the Latins, the Turks. There are ruins in Rome. Cigarette butts in New York. Brodsky’s a crafty devil. Of course you’re going to die out. Who hasn’t? “He’s dead” itches, out of its mind, like “immer,” and in a long yawn — “jamais.” -- Lev Loseff. Selected Early Poems. Tr. by Henry W. Pickford. New York: Spuyten Duyvil, 2014. P. 31-32. |
