С. 164-165. |
Brothers’ Cemetery in Riga
Some go to a cemetery as they go to museums, But curiosity does not gnaw at me—I’ll have time. So why do I wander as if across a stone book, Among the tombstones of the mass graves of Riga? White walls and cement tombstones form a panorama. Mother Latvia raised up, dressed all in marble. Before her stand rows of numerous stones, And beneath these stones—those who were killed-- Under different banners, in different years, But always—for her, and always—for freedom. And beneath a plaque, lies a colonel of Russian service, Who fell in sixteen without spiritual torment. Here, beyond Riga, there are beaches, and ceilings are slanted, And still he is convinced that this is Russia. But around all is different—quietude and Europe, The borderland general surveys his troops. And before him in voiceless and eternal parade Soldiers sleep, having perished for the fatherland. Independence, that’s the fundamental concern. A day of freedom—freedom from our ascent, From orphaned plight, from bitter verses, From Latvian riflemen, whose graves are in Russia, But who died just the same, for that same freedom, From various foes in various years. Oh, fathomless currents, linear measures, Irretrievable days and rigid beliefs! Here they lie, representing their various countries, Nearby—those who fell for Germany and two partisans. We honor the latter. But some honor the former, as heroes, For having stood up in defense of peace. For having avenged—blindly and harshly avenged-- In forty-one the injustices of nineteen forty. And he got it wrong. Though time got it all wrong too. Different truths—like graves—seemed the same. Many, smarter than he, could not sort it out. He died. And he’s well placed in the Brothers’ Cemetery. Here there’s no death. Only life, even if it Is a cemetery. Countless years of debate that have no end, With desperate refrains the dead answer the dead, Though the questions have long since lost their point. To objections they rush to add more objections. They cannot, as we do, skirt resolution. Silence. Sleeping in rows of different armies lie soldiers, The graves argue where dates and names are erased. Viewpoint with viewpoint clashes within the stone book. Time is a clot in the common graves of Riga. The twentieth century. The knife edge of all truths. Points of view, like points in a fiery battle.. 1962 Translated by Elaine Wilson |
