Ed. and with an introduction by Thomas R. Beyer, Jr. Berlin: A. In Riga
All around—hotel furniture. A picture in a golden frame. And light tossed lifelessly From the moon in midnight sky. Here were people—they’ve gone. But the heart beats just as steadily. And only in thoughts a picture is forged Of distant northern winter. And I thought: there’s nothing more miraculous, O Russia, than your depths. I see heavy dreams. I do not dream of ringing songs. A common velvet couch Constricts a tired body, And moonlight ripples white Across an unfinished novel. 1921 Translated by Elaine Wilson |
