Tallinn (The Middle Ages)
With a halberd, a night sentry Slouches in a cloudy shadow. The city is guarded tightly: The street is chained, The lights are out. Towers, gray and dented, Capped with helmets of red tiles, Look into the sloping streets, Onto the church where statues sleep Next to the tombs of knights. Times of lovers, times of madness Outlawed by the burgomaster And, swaddled like a mummy, In the full moon’s faded light, Tallinn sleeps and sees a dream. Silently pulling the seine of time Are the hands of the tower clock. Now and then hiding in the dark, With a bag full of evil seeds, The devil has come out for a catch. And the houses, silent in fear, Shielded from the prince of darkness. Yielding not to his luring promises, They have their virtuous Protestant psalms. But the grain has long been ground… Where merchants sleep in peace Brews the bitter malt in barrels, And the stream drains gold Into tightly knocked caskets. The city's proud of its trade glory. Grow rich, but wait for trouble. After all, it’s not for nothing There, behind the outpost People saw a flame-tailed star! What will it bring? Salvation? Or does it come with dreadful times? Plague, death, disaster, The turmoil of new heresy, Or the fuming trail of wars? ……………………………. All has passed – both predictions And all those who believed in them. Who could tell that only buildings will survive, still standing guard of centuries grown gray. People hope for no mercy From the eras, from the looters. What remains of all the builders, of the conquered, of the conquerors? Only Stone! Only Labor! Translated by Maria Inkateshta |
Tallinn
The orange tiles of the buildings, A proud spire over the castle wall. You walk along the narrow streets and feel: This city is a tale from the brothers Grimm. By the moss-covered tower "Fat Margaret", Under the stone arch of the gate, I listen to how the tiles answer My footsteps while midnight chimes. Barely diving into the Baltic breeze, You turn into an ancient alley – From around the corner, blinding headlights Glide along the stones and catch the ledge. And piercing through the blue medieval fog, Enveloped in uneasy silence, The crystal of the soprano’s coloratura Scatters along the radio waves. I'm glad that morning sun laughs at me And that footsteps on the tiles are so light, That sailors here are singing "The Varyag," The countrymen tested by the waves. That pigeons here are grey and white, The cornflower eyes of the girls shine at me, with blonde hair and Flexible, like stems of a wild rye. That for blue-eyed Estonia, My republics' young sister, So festive elms over the grey sea Lit up their triumphant flames. Translated by Maria Inkateshta |
Pigeons of Tallinn
I love the Gothic arrows Under the scales of tiles, A flight of swifts and white tombstones Covered in roses. I love attached horseshoes Over the towering gates And the endless turns Of the Medieval streets. But what I love most in a fresh dawn, When the air is bluer, Is listening to the cooing Of pigeons roaming nearby. Their cooing next to the old buildings, In the crowd, on the old stones, Tells about life’s eternal growth Over the old remains. Scents of the seaside, the wind sharp, And, affirming connections with song, With a wide wing span Into the lapis the flock of pigeons rose. Silver, Young, Intoxicated by the Baltic blue, It roars into the horizon like the best dream, like my celebration. Translated by Maria Inkateshta |
